horror punk

stylistic origins: punk rock / gothic rock
cultural origins: late 1970s, United States

Horror punk (horror rock) is a music genre that mixes proto-gothic and punk rock sounds with morbid and violent imagery and lyrics, which are often influenced by horror films or science fiction B-movies.

The genre is similar to and sometimes overlaps with deathrock, although deathrock leans more towards an atmospheric gothic rock sound while horror punk leans towards a 1950s-influenced doo-wop and rockabilly sound.[^1]

The Misfits are recognized as the progenitors of horror punk, releasing a series of singles and EPs beginning in 1977 before releasing their first full-length album Walk Among Us in 1982.

Misfits – Cough Cool 1977; Misfits bullet 1978; Misfits – Horror Business 1979:

Cough/Cool - lyrics

This street we walk upon This corner full of piss and fear

This street won't bear it long It slants, it tilts, it's brought outside Alive

Cover your face when you walk by Drench your visions in darkness

Spit up blood when you cough Cool, cool, cool Cough, cool, cool, cool

We dine on visions with new eyes Creep, creep, creep, creep We cut our visions with two eyes Cool, cool, cool, cool

This street we walk upon This corner full of fear

Bullet - lyrics

President's bullet-ridden body in the street Ride, Johnny ride Kennedy's shattered head hits concrete Ride, Johnny ride

Johnny's wife is floundering Johnny's wife is scared Run, Jackie run

Texas is an outrage when your husband is dead Texas is an outrage when they pick up his head Texas is the reason that the president's dead You gotta suck, suck, Jackie suck

President's bullet-ridden body in the street Ride, Johnny ride Kennedy's shattered head hits concrete Ride, Johnny ride

Texas is an outrage when your husband is dead Texas is an outrage when they pick up his head Texas is the reason that the president's dead You gotta suck, suck, Jackie suck

Arise Jackie O, Jonathon of Kennedy Well, arise and be shot down The dirt's gonna be your dessert My cum be your life source And the only way to get it Is to suck or fuck Or be poor and devoid And masturbate me, masturbate me Then slurp it from your palm Like a dry desert soaking up rain Soaking up sun Like a dry desert soaking up rain Soaking up sun

Horror Business - lyrics

Jack Grisham of T.S.O.L.

Horror punk is generally apolitical in comparison to other punk rock subgenres, although some songs do refer to political events (e.g. the Misfits’ “Bullet”, which discusses the assassination of John F. Kennedy), and some artists like Jack Grisham (on the left) and Michale Graves (on the right) have espoused their own political views.

The punk in horror punk can range from Hardcore Punk (early Misfits) to Pop Punk (Zombina & The Skeletones). With this intersection of genres and themes, the lines between horror punk, Deathrock, and Psychobilly are often blurred and many bands play a hybrid of the genres.
