1999

1999 saw the double concept album, Dead Lovers’ Sarabande (Face One); a project dedicated to the memory of Christian Death frontman, Rozz Williams. Dead Lovers’ Sarabande chronicled a nameless protagonist’s seemingly futile quest to re-unite with her deceased lover. The album was released in two parts throughout the year.

For Es reiten die Toten so schnell, Anna-Varney Cantodea went back to her demo tape of the same name and re-recorded all of its songs; the first seven tracks of this album consist of the demo tape in its original sequence. The rest of the album features re-recordings of the bonus tracks that were included on the first Sopor Aeternus album, Ich töte mich…, along with a handful of new songs. “Birth – Fiendish Figuration”, Sopor Aeternus’ signature song from their first album, appears again in its fourth incarnation on a record. The original version of “Reprise” was a spoken word piece featuring a line from the bridge of “Dead Souls”.

La Chambre d’Echo was heavily inspired by Der Narrenturm, an old Austrian hospital and psychiatric ward that has since become a museum of diseases, mutations and abnormalities of the human body. As a result, the lyrical focus is that of hospitals and medical care in general. The album artwork, in part, features Cantodea transforming into a large worm-like creature, reminiscent of the artwork for Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar.

Anna-Varney Cantodea has explained that the title is not a reference to Charles Baudelaire’s 1857 collection of poetry of the same name, but that “it is related to Jean Genet’s novel Notre Dame des Fleurs.” A double vinyl edition and a CD boxed set were also released in limited quantities of 900 and 2,000 copies, respectively.

“In der Palästra” received a release as a DVD-single, and the album proper was introduced and promoted via a promotional video.
